Misc. Notes
Alonso de Sotomayor (3), also, was a famous capitán in the conquest of America. He was living in Trinidad, in Cuba, when in 1528, as maestre de campo [???], he joined the ill fated expedition of Pánfilo de Narváez to Florida. In Narración de Cabeza de Vaca we read of the failure of the expedition and that of the 600 men who arrived in Florida in April, 1528, only four survived, including Alvar Nuñez Cabeza de Vaca who reached Mexico, nine years and 6000 miles later.

In his Narración de Cabeza de Vaca, the author wrote of Alonso de Sotomayor: Thus they perished one after another, the survivors slicing the dead for meat. The last one to die was Sotomayor, and Esquivel cut him up and fed on his body until the first of March, when an Indian, of those who had taken to flight previously, came to look if they were dead and took Esquivel along with him.
